Die neuzeitlichen Typen der Suchalgorithmen basierten auf Informationen, die mit den Webmaster eigenhändig bestehen worden sind, wie Meta-Elemente, oder durch Indexdateien in Suchmaschinen im WWW wie ALIWEB. Meta-Elemente geben einen Gesamtüberblick per Essenz einer Seite, jedoch setzte sich bald hoch, dass die Nutzung der Hinweise nicht vertrauenswürdig war, da die Wahl der angewendeten Schlagworte durch den Webmaster eine ungenaue Präsentation des Seiteninhalts wiedergeben konnte. Ungenaue und unvollständige Daten in den Meta-Elementen konnten so irrelevante Webseiten bei spezifischen Brauchen listen.[2] Auch versuchten Seitenersteller vielfältige Punkte innert des HTML-Codes einer Seite so zu lenken, dass die Seite überlegen in Ergebnissen aufgeführt wird.[3] Da die zeitigen Suchmaschinen im Netz sehr auf Kriterien angewiesen waren, die alleinig in Händen der Webmaster lagen, waren sie auch sehr labil für Abusus und Manipulationen im Ranking. Um bessere und relevantere Resultate in Resultaten zu erhalten, mussten wir sich die Anbieter der Suchmaschinen im Internet an diese Rahmenbedingungen integrieren. Weil der Gewinn einer Recherche davon abhängig ist, besondere Suchresultate zu den inszenierten Keywords anzuzeigen, vermochten unangebrachte Resultate zur Folge haben, dass sich die Nutzer nach anderen Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten für den Bereich Suche im Web umblicken. Die Erwiderung der Internet Suchmaschinen lagerbestand in komplexeren Algorithmen fürs Platz, die Aspekte beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur schwierig kontrollierbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin entwarfen mit „Backrub“ – dem Stammvater von Yahoo – eine Anlaufstelle, die auf einem mathematischen Suchalgorithmus basierte, der anhand der Verlinkungsstruktur Kanten gewichtete und dies in den Rankingalgorithmus einfluss besitzen ließ.
