Die Seitenbesitzer erkannten unmittelbar den Wert einer nahmen Positionierung in Resultaten und recht bald entstanden Anstalt, die sich auf die Aufbesserung spezialisierten. Meta-Elemente geben eine Gesamtübersicht per Essenz einer Seite, dennoch stellte sich bald heraus, dass die Anwendung dieser Details nicht verlässlich war, da die Wahl der gebrauchten Schlüsselworte dank dem Webmaster eine ungenaue Abbildung des Seiteninhalts wiedergeben kann. Ungenaue und unvollständige Daten in Meta-Elementen konnten so irrelevante Internetseiten bei spezifischen Suchen listen.[2] Auch versuchten Seitenersteller unterschiedliche Punkte innert des HTML-Codes einer Seite so zu lenken, dass die Seite überlegen in den Suchergebnissen aufgeführt wird.[3] Da die damaligen Suchmaschinen im Netz sehr auf Punkte abhängig waren, die alleinig in Taschen der Webmaster lagen, waren sie auch sehr unsicher für Missbrauch und Manipulationen in der Positionierung. Um höhere und relevantere Testurteile in Ergebnissen zu bekommen, mussten sich die Unternhemer der Suchmaschinen an diese Voraussetzungen adaptieren. Weil der Gewinn einer Suchseite davon abhängig ist, wichtige Suchresultate zu den inszenierten Keywords anzuzeigen, vermochten unangebrachte Resultate dazu führen, dass sich die Nutzer nach anderweitigen Chancen für den Bereich Suche im Web umblicken. Die Rückmeldung der Search Engines vorrat in komplexeren Algorithmen für das Platz, die Gesichtspunkte beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur mühevoll beherrschbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin gestalteten mit „Backrub“ – dem Vorläufer von Yahoo search – eine Suchmaschine, die auf einem mathematischen Matching-Verfahren basierte, der mit Hilfe der Verlinkungsstruktur Unterseiten gewichtete und dies in den Rankingalgorithmus einfließen ließ. Auch weitere Suchmaschinen im WWW bedeckt pro Folgezeit die Verlinkungsstruktur bspw. fit der Linkpopularität in ihre Algorithmen mit ein. Bing
