Die frühen Modellen der Suchalgorithmen basierten auf Angaben, die durch die Webmaster sogar vorhanden sind, wie Meta-Elemente, oder durch Indexdateien in Suchmaschinen wie ALIWEB. Meta-Elemente geben einen Gesamtüberblick über den Content einer Seite, allerdings stellte sich bald heraus, dass die Anwendung dieser Hinweise nicht solide war, da die Wahl der angewendeten Schlagworte durch den Webmaster eine ungenaue Beschreibung des Seiteninhalts repräsentieren hat. Ungenaue und unvollständige Daten in Meta-Elementen vermochten so irrelevante Websites bei speziellen Recherchieren listen.[2] Auch versuchten Seitenersteller mehrere Merkmale innerhalb des HTML-Codes einer Seite so zu steuern, dass die Seite stärker in Suchergebnissen aufgeführt wird.[3] Da die zeitigen Suchmaschinen im WWW sehr auf Faktoren abhängig waren, die nur in den Fingern der Webmaster lagen, waren sie auch sehr instabil für Abusus und Manipulationen in der Positionierung. Um tolle und relevantere Ergebnisse in Serps zu bekommen, mussten wir sich die Anbieter der Suchmaschinen im Netz an diese Umständen einstellen. Weil der Triumph einer Recherche davon anhängig ist, relevante Suchresultate zu den gestellten Suchbegriffen anzuzeigen, vermochten untaugliche Testurteile zur Folge haben, dass sich die Benutzer nach anderen Wege für die Suche im Web umgucken. Die Auskunft der Suchmaschinen im Internet lagerbestand in komplexeren Algorithmen fürs Rangfolge, die Faktoren beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur mühevoll manipulierbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin entwickelten mit „Backrub“ – dem Urahn von Yahoo – eine Suchmaschine, die auf einem mathematischen Routine basierte, der anhand der Verlinkungsstruktur Unterseiten gewichtete und dies in Rankingalgorithmus eingehen ließ.
