16-year-old arrested; deliberate capturing with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass school shooting that might have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive Faculty, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division mentioned in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging machine supplies and threatening to commit a crime which can result in death or great bodily damage.

Police said they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a capturing that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teenager was a scholar at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they discovered components to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and electronic objects that may very well be used to create further weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"School security remains a high precedence for the division," police mentioned in a statement. 

Details on whom the teenager was trying to recruit were not disclosed. Police mentioned this case stays underneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens informed the school's neighborhood that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon elements, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing threat to its schools. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and safety employees about this investigation and, as is our customary observe, maintained shut contact with our BPD School Resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive College campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation interval, we have been assured that this particular person didn't pose an immediate threat to the Berkeley Excessive College community."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary action against the student. 

In addition, a town hall meeting titled: 'Easy methods to Discuss to Children About School Violence' supplied by Alameda County Office of Training is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
