The policing minister, Package Malthouse, has disputed the suggestion of the chief inspector of constabulary, Andy Cooke, that the cost of dwelling crisis will set off a rise in crime, branding it “old-fashioned” pondering.

Earlier, the minister informed Times Radio: “The broad rule is that justice needs to be blind and I hope and imagine that's the principle that sits behind not simply the police but the operation of the courts as nicely.

“I've to challenge this connection between poverty and crime. What we’ve discovered up to now, and where there is now rising evidence, is that really crime is a contributor to poverty. That when you take away the violence and the crime from folks’s lives they generally prosper more than they otherwise would.”

Cooke had earlier stated: “The influence of poverty, and the impact of lack of opportunity for people, does lead to an increase in crime. There’s no two ways about that.”

When requested how policing might keep away from being seen because the arm of an uncaring state, he mentioned forces across England and Wales have been expert in coping with the tensions and dynamics of their communities.

“What they’ve got to keep in mind is what's the best thing for the group, and that individual, in the way they deal with those issues. And I certainly totally help cops using their discretion – and they need to use discretion extra usually.”
