Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech giant stated its iconic music participant has been changed by different units, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising, said: "At the moment, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have integrated an unimaginable music experience across all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with help for spatial audio - there is no higher option to enjoy, discover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the first MP3 player that could hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented an entire new class of digital music participant that lets you put your total music collection in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go," he said at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the same once more."

Similar MP3 gamers launched by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the identical success because the iPod.

Apple has released five versions of its music player - the Traditional, Touch, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The company has been slowly killing its iPod vary in recent times, with mobile phone technology enabling customers to hearken to music services on their phones.

In 2014, the classic click on wheel model was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano have been killed off three years later.

The seventh-generation iPod touch was the one mannequin still on sale in the present day.

Without the iPod, there would by no means have been an iPhone or iPod, according to its inventor Tony Fadell.
