The policing minister, Kit Malthouse, has disputed the suggestion of the chief inspector of constabulary, Andy Cooke, that the cost of dwelling disaster will trigger a rise in crime, branding it “old school” thinking.

As inflation hit a 40-year excessive of 9%, Cooke stated on Wednesday that officers should use their “discretion” when deciding whether to prosecute people who steal with a purpose to eat.

Showing on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Thursday, Malthouse, a longtime ally of Boris Johnson, mentioned Cooke’s considering was “old school”, adding: “As a result of persons are challenged financially … that doesn’t essentially imply they’re going to turn to crime.”

Malthouse has advised officers to not let shoplifters off if they're stealing food out of desperation during the price of dwelling crisis.

He later informed LBC, ministers would ensure police do not flip a blind eye to shoplifters stealing meals.

“Actually I wrote to chief constables just a year or so in the past saying they should not be ignoring these seemingly small crimes,” he mentioned.

Earlier, the minister instructed Occasions Radio: “The broad rule is that justice ought to be blind and I hope and believe that is the precept that sits behind not simply the police but the operation of the courts as effectively.

“I've to challenge this connection between poverty and crime. What we’ve found previously, and where there's now growing evidence, is that truly crime is a contributor to poverty.
