Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech large said its iconic music player has been replaced by different gadgets, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, stated: "As we speak, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have integrated an unimaginable music expertise throughout all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with assist for spatial audio - there isn't any better strategy to enjoy, discover, and experience music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the unique iPod and it was the first MP3 participant that would maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a complete new category of digital music player that allows you to put your whole music assortment in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go," he stated on the time.

"With iPod, listening to music will never be the identical once more."

Similar MP3 players launched by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the same success as the iPod.

Apple has released 5 versions of its music participant - the Traditional, Touch, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The company has been slowly killing its iPod range in recent times, with cell phone know-how enabling customers to take heed to music providers on their telephones.

In 2014, the basic click on wheel mannequin was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano had been killed off three years later.

The seventh-generation iPod contact was the one model still on sale immediately.

Without the iPod, there would never have been an iPhone or iPod, according to its inventor Tony Fadell.
