Could 8 (Reuters) - An Alabama regulation that makes it a felony to supply gender-affirming medical remedy to transgender youth went into effect on Sunday while a federal judge weighs whether to grant a movement to place a brief hold on it.

The laws makes it a crime punishable by up to 10 years in jail to supply puberty blockers, hormones and medical procedures to transgender youth beneath 19.

Governor Kay Ivey had signed the bill on April 8. A similar but not as far-reaching legislation in Arkansas was blocked by the courts last year before it may go into effect.

After a two-day listening to concluded on Friday, U.S. District Judge Liles Burke gave no indication on when he'll rule on the movement seeking to temporarily halt enforcement of the ban whereas a lawsuit is pending, in accordance with local media stories.

The lawsuit, brought by organizations including the Human Rights Marketing campaign and GLBTQ Authorized Advocates & Defenders, argues the ban would trigger "fast and irreparable" harm to the plaintiffs and that the measure violates several of their constitutional rights.

The groups filed the lawsuit on behalf of parents of 4 Alabama transgender youth, two physicians and a minister. The U.S. Department of Justice has joined the case, saying the Alabama law "violated the equal protection clause" of the U.S. Constitution's Fourteenth Modification.

Mainstream medical and psychological health professionals say gender-affirming care saves lives by reducing the already high danger of despair and suicide among trans youth.
